Scott Carthy

Engrossing documentary shorts from the Kingston graphic design graduate who moved to New York to intern with Sagmiester & Walsh

By Andrew Bennett

It’s always a nice surprise when something new pops up in our submissions inbox, and particularly so when it’s of the kind of quality produced by Scott Carthy, the first dedicated film maker in a while to join the intern family.

Having studied Graphic Design at Kingston University, Scott first moved into film after winning a D&AD ‘Best of Year’ award for a piece which you can see over on his vimeo page. The experience of interning at Sagmeister & Walsh over the past year has been “a huge eye opener into how the industry works”, a sentiment to which readers of the Issue Two Casting Jessica Walsh feature can attest. The experience also brought Scott to New York, where he has been exploring the city’s street dance culture.

Scott cites a keen intrigue in the ‘people who have an acute awareness of how their body works and what they can do with it’, which led him to explore the “offices” of the street dance scene, the sidewalks and subways, and bring that point of view to a wider audience. This project has culminated in a series of three films (of which the first two are online), each looking to translate the culture, creativity and current state of the street dance scene into film.

As witnesses to this subway street dancing ourselves, we can personally vouch for the incredible dexterity and skill on show by the different crews. Scott consistently captures this with expertise, whilst also educating the viewer of the incredible origins of this cultural movement.

We can’t wait to see what else is in store once the final instalment drops, and we’ll certainly be following where Scott takes his precocious talents next, via his website, which we urge you to explore below.
