While Luca Bresolin has many strings to his bow, it is when these skills come together in the form of his glorious publications that his talent is most evident. The London College of Communication undergrad – whose current year in industry features stints at Jonny Lu’s studio and Kemistry Gallery – balances each of his skills exquisitely with the rest, creating astonishing editorial cohesion as a result. The four publications we present to you today evidence this remarkable feat, collectively demonstrating Luca’s ability whilst individually providing a platform for his specific talents to flourish.

Dot&dots, for instance, builds on the work of Victor Vaserely and Bridget Riley to experiment both with texture and optical art. Phaidon Select – a brief set by Sarah Boris, design director at Phaidon Press and guest industrial partner at LCC – defines brand values through typography, with Luca using the unusual serif type Arno Pro to emphasise the narrative element of each chapter. A few words much also be dedicated to his OCR-A Extended project, where such deft typographical manipulation is once again in evidence.

It should also be noted that during this particularly generative phase, Luca has carved out a distinct aesthetic, largely due to his consistently understated colour palette. These hues have worked particularly well given his paper choices, ranging from sugar and snowdon paper to standard newsprint.

On this latter material Luca printed Alla Base, a reflection on the tribulations of professional design work which also looks to keep young creatives grounded. He told us of his frustrations that style is so often prioritised over substance, eschewing the “form follows function” maxim that Luca holds dear. In his own words: “an outcome should be shaped around its purpose…there is a reason to design it in that particular way”.

I urge you to spend a good while on Luca’s website, taking in as much as you can – this feature cannot do justice to the exceptional theoretical bases of his work, not to mention the ability it showcases.
