Thomas Hedger
Discover the London based illustrator's unbounded vectors
At the age of 24, Thomas Hedger is soon to put an end to an educational hiatus, embarking on a university degree at Central St Martins this autumn. Since leaving school, however, he’s been doing as much remote professional work as possible, ensuring his continued development such that when the opportunity came round this time, he was all the more ready to take it.
This experience of the real world has developed a maturity that befits his imminent student status. Such is his mindset, Thomas is able to balance fun whilst also addressing intriguing ideas and notions. By keeping a sketchbook to close hand at all times, he has been able to build upon concepts with a charmingly relaxed approach; the continued development of vectors has produced remarkable results thus far.
The most important part of this process, as will be clear when looking at the selection below, is colour. In maintaining a set weight and page size throughout his portfolio, Thomas establishes a uniform basis upon which he delightfully experiments and bring ideas to life, finding the perfect colours every time. This palette is fundamental, never failing to convey a higher order sense of joy that transcends the illustrative subject matter.
We’re also incredibly intrigued by Thomas’s Instagram. He posts a new drawing everyday, in part as an exercise but also as a natural progression from his ever-artistically engaged mind. He told us how it’s a great way to satisfy his creativity, motivating him daily and allowing him to “discover new artists [and] build up a portfolio of work, which is useful to look back on and has also opened new paths”.
Make sure to check out not only the work below, but also the animations at Thomas’s website which some up the playfulness at the heart of his style. And with that, we just ought to wish Thomas good luck at CSM!
